Of David

I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise;

I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things Your Name and Your Word.

                                                                                                  Psalm 138:1-2 ESV

Why I take the Bible as the literal Word of God. Each and every one. Despite looking a naive fool in the eyes of the intelligentsia, the world. It’s because I’d rather look a fool to the world than to the Lord. Because this way, even if I’m completely wrong…..I’m not wrong. Every. Single. Other. Option offers the possibility of being wrong. And if we can be wrong, we are. It’s been proven enough to me and by me for me to know this much. So my plan is to engage all believers to challenge them. To take it deeper. To examine the truth that Scripture holds and to know it deeply. That way be salvation and no other.

But first, let’s define more clearly the rules of engagement. I think for a more complete and accurate approach we must cut the cord that binds evolution to the old earth position.  I think a line between them is appropriate and necessary. While evolution is a crackpot theory with literally zero actual backing proof, old earth is a matter, in my surmising, of perception. Of time. And, of the two, provides a considerably smaller threat overall to the absolute authority of God’s Word.

Furthermore, I have no delusions about our grasping in the dark trying to piece together a puzzle with blinders on. This applies to every theory out there. I also have no illusions about God’s ability to create in any manner of His Perfect choosing, nor of the illusory, elusive nature of this space/time construct He has placed us in. So….billions of years….6,000 and change. Doesn’t really matter other than where it can be used as leverage by the enemy to cast doubt into the young in Christ. I still don’t buy it anymore; I hope you won’t either by the time I’ve finished.

Evolution on the other hand is an insidious viper of a religion, posing as science and fact. Not to put too fine a point on it. This I will go to the grave believing is a direct agenda and construct of the enemy.

Let me tell you why.

18th century. The Age of Enlightenment and later, the Industrial Revolution. The talk and idea of millions of years gets attention. Why, you might ask? You should ask. What new discovery or breakthrough in science( which wasn’t called that yet)? What finding prompted this? Are you ready?

None. Nothing. Zero. Except….man’s ideas. And, if you don’t know yet how those work out, read some history. I’m pretty sure we have some Scripture that says something about that. Oh, yes, here we go.

Oh, Timothy, guard against what was entrusted to you, avoiding worldly and empty chatter and the opposing arguments of what is falsely called knowledge which some have professed and thus gone astray from the faith           1 Timothy 6:20-21

See to it (notice the mandatory nature) that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.                              Col. 2:8

Emphasis added

There is an abundance of relevant Scripture talking about the ideas of man and, in general, how good they’re not. This particular one, you’ll notice is pointed specifically at science. Or philosophy as it was called in those days (science wasn’t a name until the 1860’s), which they, naturally(bahahaha), based on the elementary principles of the world.

And, if that’s not enough Peter warns us even more specifically:

Knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing…...they will say,”….all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of Creation.” For they deliberately overlook this fact, ….. that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished.                                       2 Peter 3:3-6

And if that doesn’t freak you right out, then you weren’t paying attention!

But, let’s continue.

18th Century. The Age of Enlightenment. The Industrial Revolution. And here, I could totally go all conspiracy theory, shadow cabinet, bad guys everywhere, and probably be underselling the drama here, but that’s a topic for another time. I’m more concerned at this point with the direct attack on His Word.

Before this, the general understanding was that the world was 6,000 or so years old. Mid century the idea of long periods of time starts floating around intellectual circles and you have to know how that appealed to those who loved patting each other on the back in obeisance to the almighty cerebellum.

Before long of course, it’s a fact because, through these new lenses of our own superiority, the evidence bears it out to a significant degree and so, so, many hours of inferring, spitballing, posturing, and hypothesizing(guessing) had been invested, how could it be any other way?

At any rate, here’s how it all played out:

1793- James Hutton releases Theory Of The Earth and uniformitarianism is born. The idea that all things behaved then as they do now. Changes are slow and gradual. Etc.

1830- The father of geology takes this theory and applies it to rocks. Charles Lyell releases Principles of Geology. His goal was to, “free the science from Moses”.

1852- Boom. You know this one. Natural philosopher (later known as biologist) Charles Darwin releases Origin of Species after applying this idea to biology.

First, make them doubt the world is only a few thousand years old.

Then make them doubt the flood.

Then make them doubt God.

Neatly and sweetly.

Yeah, but it was as we were learning more about the world, I can hear some saying. Now hear that in your head as the voice of a petulant child. Our arrogance and pride has ever been our downfall. To think that we have the slightest clue of anything eternal. We can’t even see past our self imposed blinders, much less the ones God gave us to interpret our tiny corner of the infinite.

When Raphael was complaining about how unfair it all was, the angel Uriel told him, “weigh me a pound of fire, measure me a bushel of wind, bring back one single yesterday”.

Then pointed out that these were things with which he was very familiar. How was he to question things of which he had no understanding at all?

That is from 2 Esdras, which while non-canonical, illustrates the point exceedingly well.

On the other hand, listen to this drivel:

Time is in fact the hero of the plot…..what we regard as impossible on the basis of human experience is meaningless here. Given so much time, the “impossible” becomes possible, the possible probable, and the probable virtually certain. One only has to wait; time itself performs the miracles.                                     Aug 1954 Scientific American, George Wald “The Origin Of Life”

And this predication is based on what exactly? Oh, our advanced understanding and certainty of how it is of course.

So we kick God right out of the picture and make time a god. When it’s just another creation of His.

You have no idea what it would be worth to me to know how much and how direct the enemy can intercede and interact on this side of the veil these days. Because if this is not somehow a direct plan of his in execution, I’m going to have to call it the world’s biggest coincidence. And, I don’t believe in coincidence at all.

We are running out of time and I’ve barely even presented my opening argument. If it’s His Will, I’ll be back with more. A lot more.

Let me close with this thought though.

As you walk through the sacred halls of Scripture more, you become increasingly aware of the intricacy and seamlessness with which the entire tapestry was woven forward and backward through this phenomenon we call time. Crystal clarity, exquisite beauty, wisdom beyond measure in all aspects of this trip in the mud luggage we call life. How anyone can imagine it all to be orchestrated by any other than the Author of all Creation is beyond me. Don’t get me wrong, I have huge moments of doubt, but I can’t fathom how this could be any less than His glorious Creation.

We’ve all fallen so far from Him in this self-obsessed, digitally imbibed world that we have no idea what sacred is anymore. We trod Holy Ground with filthy souls. We come to Him in orphan rags, regardless of external trappings.

Family, I love you all! Grace and peace!
